Old Home Charm

Published on November 12th, 2015

Are you all about the wood crown moldings and the high beams of a century old home? With charm comes a price, but don’t turn away the home of your dreams because of a few problems that are easy fixes. Here’s a few things to ignore when shopping for your dream home so you can purchase the mid-century home you’ve always wanted.

  1. Overlook the weird smells of old homes. If you smell a musty or stale stench, think about what you can do to fix this, maybe even within a weekend. If your home inspector doesn’t find anything weird, the smell will dissipate. If you haven’t already considered it, you should think about replacing the carpet. Carpet holds smell in its fabric and this could be a quick fix to alleviate smells.

  2. Ignore the colors in rooms. This can be challenging, but nothing a little paint can’t fix. Don’t judge a home by its color.

  3. Take note of special features. This could be anything from a claw foot tub or a cozy window seat. New homes don’t offer these unique antique features, so this is a win-win situation.

  4. Overlook the clutter. This is also tricky, but when you picture a home with your furniture and decorations in it, it starts to feel cozier. Remember, the home you are buying won’t have the current drapes or couch that you are currently looking at. Try to look for good bones and structure, and you can always add your minor upgrades.
