New Year’s resolutions are upon us. Whether you’re trying to break a vice or add a new positive habit, most people feel an increased motivation to make some sort of change. Have you started to think about any home resolutions?
Whether it’s a quick fixer upper that you’ve been meaning to get to, or an addition project you’ve been dreaming of, 2016 is the year to do it!
Where do I start? Here are some helpful tips:
- Assess – Take a close look at your home. What are the specific things you are less than satisfied with? Feel free to get down to the nitty gritty details. Walk around and note the changes you would like to make, visualize the outcomes, and start to think about how you will get there. Reorganizing your space or making it larger by adding an expansion, it’s important to gather measurements and specific info about your home to help you save some extra time and labor in the planning stage.
- Budget and Plan – It takes some time, but it’s worth it to map out the costs of your projects. Make sure you have the means to achieve what you envision before you start, or alter your plans to match them. When you are planning how to go about completing your home renovations, don’t forget to include who you will involve to help you get it done. There is no shame in asking for assistance (especially because it can help you save time and money in the long run) and don’t forget about acquiring any necessary permits before you begin.
- Communication, Flexibility, and Safety – To avoid any unwanted surprises, make sure to actively communicate with any contractors, and keep in mind that you will most likely need to be somewhat flexible throughout the process. As always, pay extra attention to safety to protect not only your home, but yourself and any other workers!
Lastly, and certainly not least, have fun and enjoy your “new” home!
