Turn Your Home into a Haunted House

Published on October 24th, 2016

Halloween is right around the corner and now is the time to start preparing.  Commercial haunted houses get pricier each year, so why not give your friends, family and neighborhood something to talk about?  Turn your home into a haunted house to create memories and creepy scares!

How much of your house do you want to be haunted?

You might need to walk around and decide where your boundaries are.  Do you want people going upstairs?  You might want to create a wall to prevent kiddos from going up there.  Utilize your yard.  You don’t need to keep the haunting inside.  Lead people outside, have them follow a path or maze and lead them back in.

Do you have a theme?

Think of a fun theme for your haunted house.  You could focus on creepy clowns, bats and vampires, haunted schoolhouse, Frankenstein’s Lab, etc.  You could also create a different theme for each room.  You could create a frightening cemetery in your yard that leads to a werewolf’s lair. Think about what works best with how your house flows. You can have a speaker in each room playing different background music to match the room’s spooky feeling.

Decorating Ideas

Remember: kids will be having too much fun in your spooky home to think about whether you went to the dollar store or have high-end expensive decorations.  Think about what your budget is and plan accordingly.  Some stores keep a supply of damaged items they can sell at a discounted price; all you have to do is ask.  Costume shops, craft stores and the local party shop can help you find the perfect décor.  Finding spooky items to DIY can help you stay within your budget and can be a fun project.  Dying sheets black or hanging black garbage bags on the walls will create an eerie feel.  Fog machines add something extra and create a frightening atmosphere.  Lighting candles and incense can add a spooky glow – just keep an eye on them so they don’t start a fire! Don’t forget to fill the corners with spider webs.  Since most of the Halloween festivities happen during the night, you will need some lighting.  Purple lights, flickering electric candles and black lights can help people make their way through your house without giving too much light.

The holidays are quickly approaching so get in the Halloween spirit with decorations to impress your friends and family. Looking to save money on your monthly mortgage payment?
