6 Interior Design Apps to Get Your DIY Projects Going

Published on February 16th, 2016

Did you plunge into a home decorating project with a ton of motivation only to find out you don’t know where to start? If you need help from picking out colors to filling the space with furniture, these apps will help you visualize your interior decorating dreams (and most of them are free!).

  1. roOomy

  2.

Rooomy (yes, three o’s) is a recent start-up company for consumers and retailers to help them stage a house that is on the market. Staging your home is an essential part of the selling process. It allows buyers to get a good idea of what the home could look like with their own furniture. A good cleaning goes a long way, but moving in temporary furniture can help sell the home way faster. Rooomy allows you drag & drop furniture into the 3D space on your iPad.

  1. Behr’s Color Smart

  2.

Behr’s Color Smart technology allows you to browse color palettes and preview them in default room pictures. I could practically play with this app all day. It allows you to save them for later and talk to a color expert. This app is frequently updated to follow the latest seasonal trends.

  1. Benjamin Moore Color Capture

  2.

This color app is a little different than the last one. You are able to take photos, zoom in, and a strip of matching colors appears at the boom. From there, you can shake your phone and four different coordinating palettes appear. You can save favorites and add notes. The app also allows you to find Benjamin Moore retailers.

  1. Houzz

  2.

Probably one of the most popular and well-known apps, houzz allows you to browse for inspiration, find professionals, and shop for everything you’ll need. It’s somewhat like Pinterest in that you can create “idea boards” to save your favorite inspiring photos.

  1. Homestyler

  2.

Homestyler allows you to take photos of your rooms and place high-quality 3D models of real furniture into the space. You may hang light fixtures, place rugs, and mirrors. Much like the other apps you can search for inspiring pictures and share on social media. The app also allows you to connect with professionals in your area.

  1. Decorist

  2.

Decorist is more of a service than an app. You create an account, select your style, and an interior designer picks everything out for you. You give them the vision, and they make two different designs for you. You can fine tune and pick exactly what you want. Use their complimentary Order for Me purchasing service and everything you want gets shipped directly to you. This is great if you don’t have the time (or patience) to decorate yourself.

Plans start at $199/room.
