New Year’s resolutions are hard to keep
, but not if you put an action plan in place. The new year offers a chance for people to recover from the holidays, regroup and get a fresh start. What better time of year to organize your home? Here are some of our New Year’s resolutions to get the home organized for the upcoming year:
Resolution 1: Downsizing
Every year you accumulate more and more things. It’s a good idea to clear your home of clutter at the same time each year, that way you hold yourself accountable. Go through your closets to find any clothes, shoes and décor you don’t use or need anymore. Fill bags with items to donate to charity. With new presents coming in, it’s a good idea to get rid of the old things.
If there are any holiday decorations you didn’t use this year, chances are you won’t use them next year, so pack those up as well. If this is going to be your year of organization, get rid of anything you won’t need!
Resolution 2: Finding a Home for Your Belongings
Now that you have downsized your items, you can finally put everything where it belongs. Another thing that can help you stay organized is a labeler. Neat and uniform labels can make a world of a difference when you are reorganizing because your family will know where things need to go. Labeling boxes with names and numbering each box in that category is very helpful. Circle the last number so you know exactly how many boxes you have in each group.
Resolution 3: Cleaning
Now that your home is decluttered and organized, cleaning should go swimmingly! It is usually the clutter that gets in the way of productive cleaning, but that shouldn’t be a problem if you have parted with unnecessary clutter beforehand. Tidying up is most productive if you do it yourself because you know where you put your items. If you are seeking help from a cleaning service, tidy up beforehand so they have clear surfaces to clean.
Having a schedule can make your job a lot easier. Dedicating each day of the week to a certain room or task holds you accountable, gives you a to-do list and makes sure nothing is forgotten.
Resolution 4: Saving Money
If you truly want to keep a clean and organized home this year, then you need to make sure you are not wasting money on unnecessary things, such as too many extracurricular activities.
List all of your bills with a fixed amount because you can’t do anything to change the payments. Then list necessary expenses such as utilities and groceries, and finally the fun expenses. Figure out your budget and find where you can cut back on spending.
Resolution 5: Keep Up
If you have accomplished all of the previous resolutions, the last thing you need to do is to keep up the same schedule throughout the year. If you find the time to stay organized and clean, then you will have more time to spend with the ones you love.
Just take a deep breath and start with the first resolution. Once you complete the first, the following resolutions will get easier and easier to accomplish. Staying clean and organized is a continuous process, but it will all pay off in the year ahead.
