Dog Days of Summer

Published on August 5th, 2015

In the hazy days of summer the temperature can sky rocket well into the 90’s, depending on where you live. Running the air condition seems to be the only viable option to stay cool, but that can cause the bill to raise even higher then the temperature outside! Keep reading for tips on how to stay comfortable but not break the bank this summer; we’ve got you covered.

It all starts with how you adjust your thermostat. Choose a temperature that is somewhat high but comfortable, which keeps the temperature difference between the outdoor and indoor very small. If you have an energy saver mode utilize that as much as possible! This will make sure that when you aren’t home your machine won’t do extra work which uses more energy.

You can also utilize ceiling fans to keep cool. Make sure these are set in a counterclockwise direction, which draws cooler air up from the floor. Portable fans can also draw cooler air into rooms so you don’t have to use your air conditioner as much.

Here are a few other ways you can maximize efficiency…

  1. Changing your filter – this will improve air quality and helps the machine breathe easier. By doing this, you won’t force the machine to work harder and waste energy.

  2. Cleaning the coils – Use a soft bristle nylon brush to gently remove any build up or caked on dirt.

  3. Professionals – Calling in a pro can ensure that your system is working to its full potential.

And just remember… if you live in the northern part of the country you will be missing these dog days of summer in just a few months! If you have any questions regarding home value or financing a home please reach out to a member of our Housing Buzz Team today!
